The monkfish, sometime called goosefish, has long been regarded as delicacy and is often compared to lobster as far as texture and taste are concerned. It has always been extremely popular, if a little more expensive than most other fish. Monkfish is caught mainly in the south and the west coast of Iceland. Most of the direct fisheries are in the autumn until mid winter, when the bulk of the stock migrates to deeper waters to spawn.
The monkfish has a large head and a very large mouth with sharp teeth. Many people claim that it is among the ugliest fish in the ocean. However, despite its looks it is one of the most valuable fish in the sea per weight. The biggest monkfish that has been caught in Iceland was 134 cm.
Good monkfish will taste better when not overcooked.
